Professor,
I believe you are absolutely correct in saying that the reverend's response to being villified is only human nature. There is nothing narcissistic about him. This man has a 40 year body of work that he has produced and has been respected for producing over the years. How could anyone expect him to stand by and allow his legacy to be trounced on and diminished to the point of being worthless? And from the list of projects that his church is involved in, that are aimed at helping and uplifting the people of Chicago, I would say that the good he has done far exceeds his controversial statements.
I am so sick of the fact that the lives of every person associated with Obama whether directly or indirectly seems to end up being hurt, damaged or the person ends up being ostracised. This quest for a black presidency is so divisive and distateful that I would rather not have a black president. After all, the freest black men in this country are the ones that stay out of the system and operate independently. They are free to think and say what they really feel about the reality of our lives as black people in America. They are free to SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER. And in my eyes they are the black men that are truly attractive, that are truly powerful and are truly worthy of the support of black America. The reverend, in my opinion, has done and will do far more for black people than Obama ever will, if he becomes president. He can even stay 10 terms and still be unable to match his reverend in contributions to the upliftment of black people. Obama as president, will never have the freedom to be as powerful a man as his Reverend and so, if I had to keep one and let go of the other, I'd keep the reverend.
